Building Defects

The following is a list of the top 10 building defects reported to the Building Services Authority.

The top 10 for July, 2000:

  1. Tiling - floor ceramic installation
  2. Cladding/lining - wall/internal ceiling
  3. Waterproofing - shower recesses
  4. Foundations - footings
  5. Rainwater plumbing - downpipes
  6. Drainage - sewerage - installation
  7. Painting - external paint application
  8. Landscaping - concrete paths and driveways
  9. Rainwater plumbing - stormwater drainage
  10. Foundations - floor slabs.

The top 10 for the year 2000 so far are:

  1. Waterproofing - shower recesses
  2. Cladding/lining - wall/internal ceiling
  3. Rainwater plumbing - roof flashings
  4. Foundations - footings
  5. Tiling - floor ceramic installation
  6. Landscaping - concrete paths and driveways
  7. Painting - external application
  8. Painting - internal application
  9. Joinery - windows and timber door installation
  10. Joinery - Aluminium window and door installation.

The Building Services Authority strongly recommends engaging licensed professionals for all work. Making sure that builders and trades have adequate and appropriate insurance is also critical so that any failure can be claimed, where the builder has performed work in accordance with policy.
