Since 1970 Austral Bricks, Australia's leading brick manufacturer has supplied the world with high quality clay bricks and pavers. The products are continually changing with the times and the demands of architects, designers, developers and homeowners. The Slick Brick system is the latest in a range of innovations from Australia's leading brick manufacturer.
Slick Bricks are a range of extruded cored clay bricks manufactured similarly to conventional clay bricks, but are precision ground on the bedding surfaces to achieve a consistent height dimension of within + 0.2mm. The bricks have shallow tongue and grooved ends to provide horizontal alignment, but the vertical perpends are not mortared. Shallow vertical and diagonal grooves on the face of Slick Bricks distinguish them from conventional bricks.
Slick Bricks are bonded together on the horizontal surfaces only, with Slick Brick Adhesive, which is a thin bed mortar. Mortar joints are approximately 1mm thick. The dimensions of the bricks are such that the coursing heights are equivalent to conventional brickwork with thick bed mortar.

| Brick Durability Classification |
|
All products manufactured by Austral Bricks Pty Ltd are classified in terms of their Durability Rating. Put simply, durability is the resistance of the brick to attack by soluble salts. Not every brick is suitable for every requirement and therefore bricks must be classified to determine their degree of resistance and their most appropriate use. According to Australian Standard 1225, bricks fall under the following durability classifications. Classifications:
Note: Exposure grade bricks may not be suitable for use in areas
subject to cyclic freezing and thawing.

| Fire Resistance Levels |
|
Fire resistance levels are specified in the Building Code of Australia. This system supersedes the old fire ratings and provides an accurate method of predicting the ability of a wall to maintain strength in a fire and to resist it's spread. The fire resistance level of a wall depends not only on the thickness of the wall but also on it's height, length and how the top, bottom and ends of the wall are connected to the other building elements. For this reason it is impossible to give an FRL for a particular brick - it will always depend on the details of the wall built with a particular brick. A typical fire resistance level for a wall would be 'FRL 90/90/90', that is 90 minutes each for each of the three FRL components. Structural Adequacy: The ability of a wall to continue to perform its structural function. Integrity: The ability of a wall to continue to prevent the passage of flames and hot gases. Insulation: The ability of a wall to provide sufficient insulation such as that the side of the wall away from the fire does not exceed a predefined rise in temperature. The CBPI publication, Design Manual 5, Fire Resistance, Levels for Clay Brick Walls, fully explains the system and allows designers to 'assemble' a fire resistance level by referring to several tables and taking a direct reading from the appropriate chart. |
