Most break-ins are opportunistic and occur through unlocked doors or windows and often occur during the day. For instance, bedrooms are a common target whilst the house occupants are having dinner or watching TV.

Home security should be neither difficult nor expensive - Care and Vigilance are free! Here are some simple tips:

Doors should be solid, key-operated and have safety hinges fitted;
Windows should be key-lockable or be fitted with grills, bars or security grills;
Doors should be fitted with quality deadlocks/bolts;
Security doors should comply with Australian Standards 2803 and 2804;
All locks should be keyed alike; and
Homes should have Alarms, with movement detectors, monitoring, 24-hour backup, tamper-resistant sirens and comply with Australian Standards 2201. Also, 14/020 wiring should be used and installers should be licensed and use Austel-approved dialler and wiring.

Additionally,

House numbers should be easily visible to police and emergency services and reflective numbers are useful;
Never leave messages on your door or advertise, in any way, that no one is at home; and
Consider leaving on a light, radio or TV and even fit a timer.
