Seniors, like everybody else, should note the Security in the Home information, as it applies universally. However, there are some other points of note that apply more specifically to the elderly, particularly as burglars view those people as "easier" targets.

The home should be clearly visible, from the street, as well as for neighbours and passers-by;
Avoid bushes and trees, which offer cover for intruders;
Install a peephole or other door viewer, check first and ask for identification, if a stranger approaches your door;
Do not advertise the fact that you live alone in the phonebook. Provide initials and surname only;
Never tell strangers that you live alone, are going away or any other relevant information; and
Do not hide your keys anywhere around the house.

Personal alarms can be very beneficial but remember that these act as deterrents and attention-attracters but do not offer any guaranteed protection!
