If you cannot afford the price of air conditioning your home or if you have an open plan style of home that does not suit air conditioning there is still the trusty old ceiling fan that will be able to move the air around and to help keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.
There are several types available and there are some tips and tricks you may not know about that may help you to choose the correct model for your home.
Ceiling fans need to be mounted 2.3 metres or more from the floor to the blades. Luminaries used in conjunction with ceiling fans fitted with lights must not be greater than 2 x 40W. Luminaries should comply with AS137 or the relevant Australian standard.
Aluminium ceiling fans are recommended for areas where grease and dirt are prevalent because they are easier to clean than Rattan fans.
The most common fan blade size is 1200mm and this is quite adequate for an average room (4 x 3m)
When choosing a fan be sure to take into account the end use and position that the fan will be in the room as this will help you to decide whether or not you need a fan.
If you want to get the most out of your fan, choose a reversible model. This will enable you to cool your house in summer and make your home more energy efficient in winter by distributing warm air efficiently.
If you have high or cathedral ceilings, use a downrod to extend the distance from the ceiling to the fan.
