With the wide selection of timber products available for construction in today's competitive market, there is an increase in the use of substitute durability class timbers other than hardwood. This unfortunately brings with it a range of problems, which have been discovered during investigations carried out by BSA Inspectors.
Inappropriate uses of timber, and use of fixings which are not in accordance with the suppliers recommendations have resulted in instances of premature deterioration of both structural components and decorative trim.
Be aware. Early breakdown of fixings, construction joints, and/or incorrect use of materials may result in intervention from BSA and a request to replace all affected sections and reinstate surrounding areas.
Are you aware of the following?
Before fixing and finishing, all joints and ends that expose untreated heartwood should be flood brushed with a water repellent before fabrication.
Timber should be primed with one coat of water repellent preservative or a coat of stain or paint.
All fixings and other hardware in contact with preservative treated pine should be hot dipped galvanised, monel, silicone bronze or stainless steel. (Electroplated fasteners are not suitable).
