Timber rot is the bane of many householders and there are ways to help protect your timber from this unsightly problem.
What usually happens is that water gets sucked into the ends of the wood by simple capillary action - this results in the creation of a wet zone which will rot when it dries out.
Obviously this does not happen overnight but it will eventually.
The problem is less likely to occur if the ends of the timber are sealed before use or when a piece is cut leaving an exposed end - as the ends are often the point of entry for moisture.
