A Mediterrean Style Garden

A Mediterranean style garden may be a little more expensive than others to start with, however it will not be as expensive to maintain. Basically it's cost of construction may be medium to high but against that it's cost of maintenance will be low to medium.

Many Mediterranean plants are naturally drought tolerant and actually flower more when given very little water. They are commonly accustomed to coastal temperatures, dry , rocky soils and little or no winter frost. Most of our common culinary herbs are Mediterranean in origin (such as oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage, basil, marjoram).

Other favourite plants include lavender and bougainvillea. These types of gardens usually display long lasting spring-autumn colour with dormancy in winter. They are commonly fragrant, attract birds and butterflies and blend very well with our natural environment.
