Ideal for decorative tree rings,
borders and garden planters.
Border Stone enhances any landscape border, is
virtually maintenance free, earth friendly and instantly adds value to your home.
All you need is a few tools and you can construct straight
and curved sections, up to 300mm above grade, to create borders, garden
terraces, tree rings and raised planters.
Begin your project by staking out the line of the border
you are making. For curved sections, use your garden hose to lay out
the contour. Dig a trench along this line. If you are going to use one,
two or three courses of block. make the trench about 75mm deep and about
300mm wide. If you are going to use four courses of block, make the
trench about 125mm deep and about 455mm wide. Firmly compact and level
the soil in the bottom of the trench. Place 25mm of compacted road base
in the bottom of the trench.
Position the Border Stone units side by side
on the prepared base and level in both directions using your spirit
level. For best results, use your hammer and bolster to remove the rear
lips from all Border Stones used for the base course. Continue
assembling additional courses by placing units in a staggered relationship
to the course beneath (running band), pulling each unit forward until
secure.
Backfill each course with clean granular fill. As a
general rule, the backfill soil zone should extend as far as behind
the wall as the wall is high. Compact this soil backfill zone. Organic
soil or clay type soil is not recommended for backfill material.
You may need partial blocks. To split a block, use
a hammer and bolster to score the block on all sides. Hammer the bolster
on the score line until the block splits. If the block does not split
easily, you may need to use a circular cut-off saw with a masonry blade.
Read and understand the operating manual before using a saw.
Always wear eye protection when splitting blocks.
