Introduction

Cacti are among the easiest of plants to look after. There are more than 4,500 plants ranging from less than 2 cm tall with other growing to 10 metres plus. Cacti have a few basic requirements

You do not have to have a green thumb when it comes to growing and caring for these amazing plants as they are a very independant species that can look after themselves and need little fussing over.

So if you have tried to grow plants before and not had much success don't give us just yet. The answer to your prayers may well be the humble cacti.


Potting Mix

Try using a good commercial cacti potting mix. Or you can make up your own mix comprising:


Light

Cacti require direct sunlight for at least part of the day, and need sun to flower. All cacti flower when mature. Some will flower when 2 years old and some take up to 20 years (!) depending on variety. Most will flower in small pots


Water

Cacti must have water to grow. The general rule for cacti is water only when the soil is dry. Good drainage is absolutely essential and for this reason it is not recommended that you use a saucer, water left in saucers under cacti will result in early lossof the plant. Cacti do not require a lot of water.


Pests

Loosen the soil in the pot. Take hold of the roots at the base (Be careful of prickles on the roots) and lift the plants out. shake the old soil off the roots, and gently tamp into the new soil. Use leather gloves or newspaper to handle the cacti. Do not overwater your repotted cacti. The best time to repot cacti is Spring. the best time to replant is spring.


Smart tips

It is important to not fuss over your cacti too much. They are hardy plants that do not need a lot of tendering. Just do not totally forget them as they do require a bit of care and attention every now and again.

Cacti can be a smart way to get yourself into gardening. They can be bought relatively cheaply from nurseries and hardware stores and if looked after can be a feature in your home or garden.

Be careful with kids around cacti as the prickly stems can hurt if touched or fallen on.
