Summer is approaching and everybody is getting ready for those BBQ's and outdoor activities that we all enjoy with our family and friends at this time of year, the garden should be looking great and the lawn green and plush. Unfortunately, the invasion of weeds taking over your gardens can ruin your summer fun. To eliminate those nasty weeds once and for all simply follow the information below.

What is a weed?

A weed is an undesirable and unwanted plant, which is fast growing and aggressive and usually ugly. But the worst thing is that they take the space, water, sun and food from the wanted plants.

Prevention...

Bare soil is an invitation to weeds so try to keep any area that is bare mulched, this will lessen the number of weeds. When you do see a weed, prompt action for removal before they spread or seed is set is the best action.

Dealing with weeds...

Try the following solutions to beat the weeds.

Individual weeds, remove the entire plant, including the roots and any bulbs attached to the roots by pulling them out or digging them out. Get your kids to do it for pocket money.
Spraying, biodegradable weed killers which are sprayed onto leaves are a convenient and effective way to kill weeds which are too hard to remove by hand.
Smothering, you can cover the weeds with a light barrier (ie. flattened cardboard box).
Painting, for trees and shrubs make a flat cut close to the ground and paint the cut with an undiluted professional strength weed killer, this has to be done within five minutes of the cut being made. For tree stumps it is better to drill a few holes into the stump before applying the herbicide.

Herbicides...

Read all labels thoroughly before buying, when mixing and when applying.
To maximise the effectiveness of the herbicide, spray when weeds are in strong growth eg. summer months.
Avoid contact with plants as even a small amount can kill them.
Remember to check if more than one application is necessary.
