A kidsafe backyard is a place where there are plenty of child friendly things to do, but without major hazards.

A Safe Place

Children need a safe place to play that is fenced off from the driveway, the pool, any steps or stairs in the garden or around a verandah.
Fences should be well maintained and without gaps or sharp edges.
Children also need an area that is open and clear of obstacles.
Backyard play equipment should be sturdy and strong, well maintained, suite the age and size of the child, have a suitable surface under play equipment that is safe to fall onto.

All locks and catches should be child resistant.
Ladders should be stored out of children's reach.
Swimming pools and spas must be fenced. They must have a self closing, self latching gate.
Store away all tools, sports equipment, toys and machinery when not being used.

Poisonous Plants in the Backyard

Many garden plants, even if not poisonous, would have very unpleasant side effects if they were eaten. Many parents know that common plants such as Oleander, Deadly Nightshade and Foxglove are poisonous. Parents are less aware that plants such as Buttercup, Daphne and Daffodil can also be dangerous.
