Allergies are something a lot of us live with but there are some
things you can do that can help to reduce the causes of many household allergies.
Gardens
- Think carefully about the type of plants you have growing in
and around your home - pollen from plants can really set off allergies
- Ask your local nursery about what type of plants may be suitable
for you and your family
Building & Renovating
- Consider installing flooring that is sympathetic to allergy suffers - eg tiles, floorboards
or other hard surface floors as these types of floors are easy
to keep clean and hard for dust mites to accumulate
- When panting either stay away until the smell from the solvents is gone or is to a minimum
or you could use some zero-solvent alternatives.
Home Interiors - Dust
- Dust is a major cause of allergies in the home and there are several ways to combat it
- One way to help reduce dust is to vacuum your home regularly
- the less dust around your house the fewer dust mites to contend with
- You can keep on top of dust by regularly dusting the home, especially
rooms that are used a lot
- The best way to dust is by using a damp cloth - this stops the
dust from flying about as you are dusting
- Try to have all of your collectables, knick knacks etc as well
as the stereo, TV and video enclosed in cabinets or display cases
- this will greatly reduce the amount of dust you have to contend
with and will reduce the time spent dusting
- Consider buying some anti-mite covers for your bedroom as well as
keeping the dust to a minimum
- If you dust regularly the task remains fairly small and won't
take up to much time, whereas if you let it build up the job is
much more daunting and will take considerably longer
Animals
- Try to keep your animals outside - although they are considered
one of the family, pets can be a major source of allergies
- Keep them out of the main living areas and bedrooms
- Keep your pets clean
